Data Engineer (Volunteer)

Are you interested in learning the ins and outs of a nonprofit organization in a challenging, rewarding environment? The nonprofit news organization WhoWhatWhy is seeking an experienced Data Engineer to lead and grow our team of analytics experts. As Data Engineer you will be responsible for expanding and optimizing our data and data pipelines, and ensuring that anything 'œinteresting' is available to our data scientists and business analysts. 

The ideal candidate must be an adaptable self-starter and capable of managing their workload and prioritizing tasks in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment. This person would have the ability to work independently with minimum supervision demonstrating initiative, organizational skills, time management, and precise attention to detail.

As a nonprofit that accepts no advertising, we are staffed largely with skilled volunteers dedicated to elevating public awareness and fostering a more vigorous democracy.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with development and data management tasks as needed to support analytics projects.
  • Work closely with developers, consultants, and business analysts to understand needs.
  • Design, build, and launch new data extraction, transformation, and loading processes. 
  • Assist with the design, build, and launch of new data models.
  • Support existing processes and develop scripts and tools to automate common administration tasks.
  • Design and develop data models. 
  • Work with languages like Java, Python, Go, Bash, and SQL. 
  • Build batch and streaming data pipelines with cloud-based data services like Azure Data Factory.
  • Monitor all data pipelines for accuracy and availability. Troubleshoot and resolve any problems that occur.
  • Respond to ticket requests from the Data Team for data corrections and pipeline updates.
  • Create reusable scripts and programs for data Extraction, Transformation and Loading (ETL).
  • Work with other departments to understand their needs and engineer data solutions.
  • Be an expert on our pipelining solutions and cloud infrastructure.
  • Qualifications

  • 5+ years of data engineering experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, IT, Data Science or related field.
  • You have previously built large data products from scratch and maintained those products through the entire software development lifecycle at a growth-stage startup.
  • You have previously managed a team of engineers or served as a tech lead on a significant project.
  • Working Knowledge of Power BI, Python, Azure.
  • You are energized by working in a fast-paced, highly collaborative, and ambitious startup work environment.
  • You are a team player and have the ability to communicate data structural concepts and ideas to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • You have a strong command of Python and have worked with backend frameworks such as Django or Flask.
  • You're familiar with front-end frameworks like React and Angular, and may have used them when crafting UIs for data products or tools.
  • You've been responsible for provisioning and configuring production infrastructure on a common cloud provider such as Azure, AWS or GCP.
  • You're familiar with Entity Resolution across and within datasets, having encountered the common pitfalls and challenges associated with it.
  • You've worked with data scientists to put supervised learning models into production.
  • You're knowledgeable about graph theory and have previously worked with graph algorithms and data structures.
  • You have an interest in US electoral politics.

  • Expectations 

    You will work remotely and on your own schedule, though we require a minimum commitment of 10-15 hours a week. Because our staff is spread throughout the world, we communicate mostly through Slack and email, and team members are requested to be highly responsive in a timely manner. We prefer candidates who can commit a minimum of six months to our organization. This is a work-at-home position.
